Opening and Closure of Shops & Institutions in Maharashtra
Pursuant to Maharashtra shops and business institutions, shops can only be opened between 7 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. However, shops dealing solely with milk, produce, fruit, fish, beef, bread or some other products can be opened before 7 a.m. Also, shops dealing mostly with pan bidi, cigars, matches and other ancillary products can be open until 11 p.m.Commercial establishments in Maharashtra can be opened on any day after 8.30 a.m. It must be locked by 9.30 p.m.
It is important to remember that the Government of the State has the power to determine early opening hours for different types of shops in different regions.
Working hours Shops & Establishments in Maharashtra
Pursuant to the Shops and Establishment Act in Maharashtra, no employee shall be allowed or authorized to work in any shop or commercial establishment for more than nine hours in any day and forty-eight hours in any week. Any employee may also be allowed or approved to work in a shop or commercial enterprise for a total of up to six hours in any week in excess of that limit.
Furthermore the time of employment of an employee in a store or in a business establishment must be so fixed that there is no longer a period of continuous work of more than five hours and that no employee is needed or permitted to work more than five hours until he or she has had a period of rest of at least one hour.
There is no provision or approval for any child to work in any institution in the State of Maharashtra. Opening and closing hours are even different for young people and women. Young people should not be required or permitted to work in any facility after 7.00 p.m. and women should not be required or permitted to work in any facility after 9.30 p.m.
