The Import Export(IE) Code is a necessity for registration for individuals exporting or importing from India products and services. IE Code is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India. IE Codes may be used during the lifetime of the issued organization and do not require renewal or registration. For most of the organisations the IE code is then recommended, regardless of whether they actually use it.
The application for the IE Code and the necessary supporting documentation shall be forwarded to the Directorate General for International Trade. The DGFT will release the IE Code for the company within 15 – 20 working days or less after an application is submitted.
